"The Beguiled" is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, when Cpl. John McBurney finds himself on the run as an injured Union soldier and deserter. He seeks refuge at an all-female Southern boarding school where the teachers and students seem more than willing to help. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events.
The film is based on the novel of the same name (originally published as A Painted Devil) by Thomas. P. Cullinan. It stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. It premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, and was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in its main competition section, where Coppola won the Best Director award, becoming only the second woman to do so.
